Flora

With its spontaneous plants and lush vegetation, the Montefeltro area is one of the richest wildlife habitats.

Flora

The area around San Leo is characterized by dense vegetation, typical of hilly and woody areas. Upstream, on top of the highest hill in the region, at 800 meters above sea level, you can find woods and thickets, whereas downstream farms are more common. Wood vegetation usually includes oaks and thermophilic species such as service trees and butcher’s broom. On the hills, where the soil is rich in mar and clay, you will find hop hornbeams, manna ashes, turkey and pubescent oaks. Sometimes, you can also come across chestnut trees, golden chains, and, more rarely, beech trees. Ancient old beech trees can be spotted at high altitude, in Villagrande, near Monteboaggine, on the road to the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Faggio (literally, Saint Mary of the Beech Tree). Right there you will find a small yet well-preserved beech grove, giving us a good idea of what the Montefeltro might have looked like in the past. The area is also very rich in natural, spontaneous and rural vegetation. Gardens, hedges and trails make up a varied set of plants growing near country houses and farmed lands such as broom, old man’s beard, wide blackberries, elder trees, choke cherries and many others, adding colour to a an already very coloured landscape.
Special mentions deserve the different species of wild orchids that colour the underbrush, and San Leo’s rocky peaks and lawns. In spring and autumn, the many species of mushrooms make these woods the favourite destination for mushroom seekers and lovers of good cuisine.
